People in Wuxi can expect the next 40 nights to be full of color after the city initiated the Fascinating Night Tour Festival of Jiangnan Ancient Canal Tourism Resort on Aug 17.
Started in 2015, the annual event has different themes for each year. This year's is "Opera Ancient Canal & Musical Liangxi" which suggests that shows about traditional operas and folk music will be staged.
The newly-created operatic play Love 600 and classic Shanghai opera shows will be on offer, and a fashion show featuring Jiangnan (regions south of the Yangtze River) styles will also be held in early September.
Folk music, dance and erhu (traditional Chinese two-string musical instrument) performances will showcase the unique culture along the Grand Canal at the closing ceremony.
Winding from Beijing to Hangzhou, the Grand Canal has been listed as a UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage site. Wuxi is home to the last existing stretch of the ancient waterway in the Yangtze River Delta.
