As the Spring Festival travel rush kicks off, the Meicun Expressway Service Area in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, once again takes center stage.
After its recent upgrade, this service area is poised to welcome a surge of visitors and vehicles, becoming a must-visit stop for road travelers.
Entering the newly revitalized Meicun service area, visitors pass through an archway into a food street inspired by the architecture of the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties. Overhead, a ceiling adorned with koi fish and a staircase that seems to float upward symbolize continuous good fortune and progress, with every detail reflecting the romance of Chinese culture.
The highlight of the service area is its tiered central stage. The first platform regularly hosts performances of Xiju opera and Jiangnan silk-and-bamboo music; the second platform serves as the primary stage for theatrical performances; and from the viewing terrace, visitors can take in panoramic views of the entire service area.
Notably, the service area features the country's first and largest ecological zone dedicated to freshwater fish. Ten large cylindrical aquariums stand side by side, with schools of fish swimming through softly moving aquatic plants, creating a dynamic underwater world.
Even the restrooms are full of surprises. Structural columns have been transformed into a "Tree of Life" installation, symbolizing the vibrant growth of the economy. Upon leaving the restrooms, visitors are greeted by a romantic starry sky ceiling, as if standing in the vast universe.
During the Spring Festival, the service area will host a series of special activities, including a Year of the Horse-themed cultural exhibition, an intangible cultural heritage market, and folk performances, all designed to immerse visitors in the festive atmosphere.
