Wuxi took a direct hit from Typhoon Dolphin on Aug 10. Yet by the next morning, the city had recovered to a great extent — roads were passable, public transport ran according to schedule, and daily life was on a steady path back to normal.
The rapid turnaround came after thousands of municipal workers, police, utility crews and engineers labored through the night to pump out floodwater, clear debris and restore essential services.
High winds and heavy rain left several residential communities flooded and without electricity. By the end of Aug 10, temporary power had been supplied to 30 households, with full residential restoration targeted for midnight on Aug 11.
Fallen trees and damaged infrastructure littered multiple road sections overnight. Landscaping crews worked in the rain to remove toppled trees and treat flooded stretches along major routes such as Taihu Road and Lihu Road.
Severe flooding developed along the Grand Canal from mid‑afternoon on Aug 10, with rising water overwhelming the drainage system and causing canal water to backflow onto roads. Emergency response teams deployed sealing airbags near the entrance to Wuxi No 1 High School to temporarily isolate the canal from the pipe network, while mobile pumps were stationed at several key bridges.
Wuxi's subway system has resumed full normal operations across all lines. Maintenance crews have conducted comprehensive safety inspections to address residual flooding, debris and moisture‑damaged equipment.
