The global packaging giant Amcor is accelerating its expansion in the Asia-Pacific region, with top executives meeting local officials in Wuxi on Sept 2 to push forward a major investment project.
Peter Konieczny, Amcor's global chief executive officer, met with Du Xiaogang, Party secretary of Wuxi, to discuss the company's "three headquarters and three bases" initiative. This $200 million project is set to consolidate Amcor's regional leadership, research, development and manufacturing operations in the Chinese city.
The Swiss-headquartered company, a leading provider of packaging for consumer goods and healthcare products, has had a presence in Wuxi for more than three decades. Over that time, the company has established five subsidiaries in Jiangyin, a county-level city of Wuxi, including an Asia-Pacific R&D center and Amcor (China) Investment. These operations currently generate annual output valued at over 2 billion yuan ($297.67 million).
The latest push follows a visit by a Wuxi trade and technology delegation to Amcor's Swiss headquarters in April, during which both sides agreed to deepen industrial collaboration and innovation partnerships. The company subsequently moved its China investment headquarters to Jiangyin that same month.
According to the latest plans, the Asia-Pacific R&D headquarters and a new material packaging production base are already operational. Future phases are poised to add an Asia-Pacific headquarters for new material packaging, a Greater China headquarters for healthcare packaging, and production bases for food, personal care and medical packaging.
Once fully completed, the Wuxi campus will serve as Amcor's core hub for regional headquarters functions, R&D and manufacturing across the Asia-Pacific.
The year 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of the innovative strategic partnership between Switzerland and China, as well as the start of China's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30), a timing both sides described as presenting significant opportunities for deeper collaboration.
Local authorities have pledged to continue improving the business environment by streamlining policies and enhancing services to support Amcor's project development and broader operations in China.
