Over 40,000 5G base stations will be constructed in Wuxi after four communications operators received approval to build them, according to a deal signed on May 12.

The operators - China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Tower - will spend 28.7 billion yuan ($4.04 billion) to build these stations in Wuxi. The deal will also look for local providers on related products and services with over 10 billion yuan.

Wuxi Mayor Du Xiaogang attended the signing ceremony and noted that the city will continue to optimize its business environment and provide better services for 5G development. More investments are also welcomed, he said.

Wuxi boasts a strong industrial foundation for 5G networks. As a national sensor network demonstration zone, the city is home to over 50 enterprises and institutions that develop equipment for a 5G industrial chain with a revenue that exceeded 30 billion yuan in 2019.

This March, the municipal government issued a five-year plan for promoting the construction and development of 5G in the city and highlighted that the region will strive to develop 5G networks and accelerate the commercialization of 5G across Wuxi. Wuxi is the first prefecture-level city in China to do so.
