Wuxi, a national industrial leader known for its manufacturing prowess, was brought into focus for its work in forming an independent and complete modern industrial system during this year's National People's Congress (NPC).
Du Xiaogang, mayor of Wuxi and a NPC deputy, said that the city has been revving up development in innovative industries such as the internet of things (IoT) and integrated circuit (IC).
In 2019, Wuxi's IoT and IC industries were valued at 120 billion yuan ($16.8 billion) and 280 billion yuan respectively, and the city experienced strong growth in industrial clusters focusing on IoT, IC, high-end textiles and apparel, high-end software and energy-saving and environmental protection.
According to the Government Report at the third session of the 13th National People's Congress, the government will encourage the upgrading of manufacturing and the growth of emerging industries, boost smart manufacturing and create new competitive strengths in the digital economy.
Following such steps, the Wuxi government will also press ahead with reforms such as streamlining administration and delegating authority, improving regulations, and upgrading services, Du said.
In addition, in order to realize the city's vision of leading the charge in technological innovation in the Yangtze River Delta region, Wuxi has brought together 90 percent of the city's high-level scientific research institutes, 60 percent of its science and technology public service platforms, and 70 percent of the high-level talent and national science and technology projects in its centralized development area along the Wuxi Taihu Bay, Du added.
With its latest favorable policies for college graduates and talent programs, Wuxi will continue to encourage business startups and innovation, Du noted.
