A total of 2,450 students from schools in Jiangsu played the erhu together on May 13 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China this year.

The event was held at the square of Heilan Art Museum in Jiangyin, with five famous Chinese musicians in attendance, making the performance more rich and appealing.

Jiangyin is known as the hometown of Liu Tianhua (1895-1932), one of China's greatest erhu composers and performers. Liu died young at the age of 37, but he nevertheless left a great impact in the country's music and cultural scene. Throughout his life, Liu passionately advocated for the popularization of traditional Chinese music in society.

In Jiangyin, people are actually more interested in learning traditional Chinese instruments, particularly the two-stringed erhu, as compared to its Western counterparts such as piano and violin. A total of 18 primary schools in Jiangyin now provide erhu lessons to students.

Deng Jiandong, one of the performers and a famous erhu player, expressed his wishes for students in Jiangyin that they can pass down the culture and development of the erhu to future generations.
