More than 300 experts from China and other countries, including the United States and Malaysia, attended the eighth International Symposium on Ethnic Literature from July 16 to 17.
The symposium was sponsored by the School of Foreign Studies of Jiangnan University, the School of Foreign Languages of Central China Normal University, and the Professional Committee for World Ethnic Literature of Chinese and Foreign Languages and Cultures Comparative Association.
Themed on the ethnicity of literature and the universality of ethnic literature, the symposium's topics included theoretical construction of ethnic literature studies, transnational ethnic literary communities, and the relationship between ethnic literature and mainstream literature.

Fang Wenkai, dean of the JU's School of Foreign Studies, presided over the opening ceremony and Du Guocheng, vice-principal of JU gave a briefing on the university's development in recent years and said he believes that research on ethnic literature is of academic and cultural significance.
University professors such as Li An'shan from Peking University, Zhu Zhenwu from Shanghai Normal University, King-Kok Cheung and Russell Leung from the University of California, Los Angeles, and Fan Pik Wah from the University of Malaya, shared their views on topics such as world civilization, Chinese ethnic poetry, and Chinese writing in Malaysia.
They also discussed some cutting-edge literary problems, including cultural identity, identity building, trauma narrative, and cultural memory.
