A fateful phone call from a Chinese friend propelled Norwegian entrepreneur Tommy Evensen into a textile venture, kicking off his pursuit of the Chinese dream in Wuxi, East China's Jiangsu province.

Thirteen years ago, Evensen was surprised by an invitation from his old Chinese friend Zhao Zhiqiang to co-establish a factory in China. Considering this as a natural progression of their long-standing collaboration and profound experience in the textile industry, Evensen embraced the opportunity.

"I had full trust in Zhao's integrity and competence," Evensen said. "His network and our shared commitment to quality and transparency gave me the confidence to move forward without major concerns."

Having managed a textile brand himself, the 48-year-old Norwegian had built up a valuable network of contacts in Northern Europe, a network instrumental in Zhao extending the invitation. "My primary target clients are located in Northern Europe, and I've known Evensen for many years. He is a trustworthy and resourceful person," he said.

Drawing on these international connections, Zhao's textile expertise and Chinese connections, and their shared commitment, the two founded Kalito Group in 2012. Based in Jiangyin, a county-level city in Wuxi, this high-end textile manufacturer caters to the European and American markets.

The textile industry has long been a pillar of Jiangyin's economy. According to latest official figures, the city hosts over 3,000 textile companies across the supply chain, including about 650 with annual revenues exceeding 20 million yuan ($2.78 million).

"Jiangyin offers everything we need to succeed as a premium manufacturer: reliable suppliers, technical know-how, logistical infrastructure, and a skilled workforce," said Evensen. "It has a unique ability to adapt and evolve quickly, which is a huge advantage in a fast-moving industry like fashion and sportswear."

Acknowledging that their entry into the textile sector came relatively late given its maturity in China, Evensen outlined their strategy for excelling in this fiercely competitive environment: delivering unparalleled top-notch products and services under one roof while defying price wars.

"We refrain from bargaining. Instead, we present our products, allowing our clients to discover for themselves that Kalito is the manufacturer they are looking for and accept the offer without hesitation," he said.

Backed by unwavering confidence in their products and years of expertise in premium sportswear, Evensen secured a significant deal with the Norwegian premium cross-country ski clothing producer, Swix, about seven years ago.

"It means a lot for us to cooperate with one of the biggest and most esteemed cross-country ski brands in the world. This partnership underscores Kalito's standing as a high-quality manufacturer," the entrepreneur said.

From its modest origins as an underwear factory, Kalito has now transformed into a garment maker with 250 employees and two factories covering a combined area of 14,000 square meters. It currently boasts a loyal customer base comprising approximately 25 clients across Europe, America, and Australia.

The company also emphasizes on employee welfare and flexibility.

"We offer competitive salaries and accommodating work-from-home options. So I think we have created a positive and nurturing work environment here at Kalito," said Evensen.

Yu Sihui, who has worked at Kalito for about five years, said, "It's fulfilling and enjoyable to work at the company, as the bosses are caring and encouraging. We're lucky to have such good bosses."

Evensen has evolved into a cultural bridge builder after getting a further understanding of China, surpassing his role as a business development manager. He actively fosters significant relationships and dispels misconceptions about China, encouraging clients and others to explore the wonders of the country.

"Personally, I feel fortunate and proud to have developed such strong ties with China and to have learned so much about its culture and people," he said.

Due to his strong ties with China, Evensen's eldest daughter, Kaja Evensen, has also developed a deep affection for the country and has dedicated years to learning Chinese.

In the future, Evensen envisions steady growth for Kalito. By embracing new technologies and upholding stringent quality standards, Kalito is poised to continue its success story in Wuxi's thriving textile industry. As Evensen puts it, "Our journey is a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and unwavering dedication to excellence."
