Jiangnan University is directly overseen by the Ministry of Education. It is a significant institution part of the national "211 Project" and a "Double First-Class" initiative university. With a long-standing history and a rich cultural background, the university traces its origins to the San Jiang Normal School established in 1902.

JNU comprises 22 schools, such as the School of Food Science and Technology, School of Biotechnology, School of Design, and School of Textile Science and Engineering. These schools span 12 academic fields, including science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, literature, history, law, economics, education, and the arts. It has nine postdoctoral research stations and offers 13 doctoral programs including Food Science and Technology and Light Industry Technology and Engineering, which are recognized as national "Double First-Class" disciplines.

The university currently hosts over 21,000 undergraduates, over 14,000 master's and doctoral students, and 301 international students. JNU has formed cooperation agreements with 229 universities and research institutes across 42 countries and regions. It has established 36 international joint laboratories and received approval from the MOE as an "Innovative Practice Base for High-Level International Talent Training". It also initiated the Belt and Road Food Education and Technology Alliance and the Jiangsu-South Korea University Cooperation Alliance.
