The recently released Wuxi Xiju Opera Protection and Inheritance Regulations in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, have designated June 7 as Xiju Opera Day.
Xiju Opera, one of the three major genres of East China's traditional theater and a key part of Jiangsu's cultural heritage, is often called the "Plum Blossom of Taihu Lake". It was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2008.
As an opera genre named after the city of Wuxi, Xiju Opera serves as the most iconic traditional cultural emblem. Strengthening its protection and inheritance is crucial for promoting cultural prosperity, creating a culturally robust city, and boosting Wuxi's cultural influence.
The regulations define the extent of protection and inheritance rights for Xiju Opera, clarify the roles of the government and its departments, and encourage public involvement. They also promote the innovative growth of Xiju Opera and highlight the importance of training performers as well as financial and infrastructural assistance.
