Wuxi drew attention to the city's major achievements during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period at the sixth Session of the 17th People's Congress of Wuxi Municipal Government on Jan 22.
Over the five-year period, Wuxi's GDP grew from 1.23 trillion yuan ($176.64 billion) to approximately 1.68 trillion yuan, achieving an average annual growth rate of 5.7 percent. The city's per capita GDP surpassed $30,000, maintaining its leading position among large and medium-sized cities nationwide.
By 2025, Wuxi's foreign trade volume had reached the 800 billion yuan mark, with actual foreign capital utilization amounting to $18 billion, representing 15.1 percent of the province's total.
The city created 776,000 new urban jobs, and the per capita disposable income of residents exceeded 75,000 yuan.
Wuxi has focused on building a robust modern industrial cluster, cultivating five national advanced manufacturing clusters, and increasing the number of industrial clusters with revenues exceeding 200 billion yuan to eight.
From 2021 to 2025, Wuxi invested 81 billion yuan in ecological protection and management. The water quality of Wuxi's section of Taihu Lake historically reached Grade III, which is considered fairly good and suitable for most aquatic life. Additionally, the average PM2.5 concentration reached its best level since monitoring records began.
The conference also outlined the city's goals for the next five years. Wuxi aims to surpass 2 trillion yuan in economic output, maintaining its status among the leading large and medium-sized cities nationwide in terms of per capita GDP. By 2035, the per capita GDP is expected to double from 2020 levels, with the per capita income of local residents more than doubling.
