Wuxi's Sunan Shuofang International Airport opened a new chapter in its history on Nov 22 as the 5 millionth passenger of the year passed through its doors, a new record for the airport in Jiangsu province.
A Mr. Zhong, originally from Harbin, Heilongjiang province, was told he had become the airport’s 5 millionth passenger of 2016 as he stepped off his flight from Qingdao, Shandong province. He could not help showing his excitement.
"I have been to Wuxi many times but never imagined I would set this record," Zhong said, "Now the service offered by the airport is getting increasingly better which makes me really happy."
Sunan Shuofang currently offers connections to 22 domestic cities and 9 overseas destinations. The airport runs 130 flights per day on average, with occupancy rates of 78.8 percent.
New daily flights have been added this year from between Wuxi and Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Kunming, Shenyang and Sanya.
Next year, the airport is hoping to increase the number of connections further with flights to Tokyo, Japan and Incheon in South Korea, as well as introducing some freight flights.
The passenger number is expected to reach 5.5 million by the end of the year.
