For many pedestrians, a reserve traffic police officer is a respected but inconsequential individual, merely a uniformed figure who stands anonymously at the side of the road checking the misdemeanors of vehicles, halting the advances of would-be jaywalkers. However, Qin Jiacai, a 16 year veteran of the Wuxi traffic police, is neither ordinary nor unknown.

His stalwart frame and sterling smile are iconic to residents of downtown Wuxi who have watched lao Qin, good ol' Qin, patrol with integrity and friendliness for many years. At the end of February, however, Qin will make his final salute, as the 55 year old takes off his hat and pearly white gloves for good.

For the entirety of Qin's years of service, the Taizhou native has worked the busy intersection of Zhongshan Road and Jiefang South Road, which passes in front of Wuxi's bustling downtown Nanchan Temple area.

His duties involve smoothly directing the flow of traffic, stopping pedestrians from crossing the road incorrectly, reminding cyclists to pay attention to their surroundings, and helping the elderly across the road. And yet, anyone who has encountered the affable Qin can attest to the fact his role and remit extends far beyond that of a reserve traffic police officer – he is purveyor of patience and good will in a helter-skelter world of horns, haste, and vehicle fumes.
