Chen Jingyu, a leading lung transplant surgeon from Jiangsu province and a deputy to the National People's Congress (NPC), is encouraging more organ donation volunteers to help reduce shortages in the medical system.
At the NPC, the surgeon suggested that more people sign up to donation programs and that policy be introduced for situations in end of life and terminal cases to reduce burdens on families.
It's not the first time that the deputy director of Wuxi People's Hospital has made his efforts in this field. Two years ago, he made a suggestion to the NPC that a green channel be set up on civil aviation, high-speed rail and cross-provincial highway networks for the express transport of donated organs.
"Organs received from donors should be transplanted within the shortest time possible," Chen said. "Medical staff often needs to hurry to an airport once they have acquired the donated organs. Allowing them to board at short notice is beneficial for all parties."

Thanks to his effort, six government authorities issued a notice in May 2016 announcing the establishment of green channels for donated organs. The green channel stipulates that medical personnel carrying organs for transplant are given priority during check-in and security checks at airports, with the flight they board having priority takeoff.
