Since the resumption of gaokao in 1977, the exam has offered a relatively fair chance for Chinese students to get a place in college.
It has also gone through many major changes over the past 40 years, including directed enrollment and distribution, recommendation for admission, no age limits, independent enrollment and more choices on subjects this year.
