Wuxi is the main production place for bamboo carving in the southern area of the Yangtze River. The bamboo works of Wuxi are refined, simple, elegant, beautiful and decorative and enjoy increasingly popularity among local people and tourists in Wuxi.

Chinese bamboo carving originated in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and reached its peak in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) dynasties. At that time, there were a great number of masters engaging in green-retaining bamboo carving, and they have exerted a far-reaching impact on future generations.

After the Qing Dynasty, the bamboo carving has been spreading around Wuxi. In 1914, the Wuxi bamboo carving won second price in the Panama International Exposition. In June, 2008, the State Council listed it as expansion projects of the first batch of national intangible cultural heritages. More people are seeing bamboo carving's beauty.
